Gears 5 Horde Mode Has Evolved into Something Different and Welcomes in a Bit of Halo

Microsoft has been dropping some news at Gamescom this year. Nothing groundbreaking, but there was interesting Gears 5 stuff.

In particular Horde Mode in Gears 5 is pivoting into the realm of hero shooters. Each character now will a unique ability. Kait for example, can cloak while JD can request an air strike, Marcus can inject himself with dynabol and roid-rage until he cries… probably.

Also announced at the Xbox conference is a Halo: Reach character pack for Gears 5.

Halo fans will recognize Spartans Emile-A239 and Kat-B320 from Halo: Reach, who will also have their own unique abilities in Horde Mode. Space Meatheads fighting along side with Space Marines. MASS HYSTERIA!

Gears 5 Devs Reveals Sweet Looking Arcade Mode

Gears 5 looks like it’s coming along nicely. Today, a first look of ‘Arcade’ was released, which is a new type of versus multiplayer, which looks mighty nice.

We are excited to reveal your first look at Arcade, a brand new type of Versus experience for all types of players. This ultimate jump-in / jump-out mode brings hero characters, each with their own distinct abilities and weapon upgrades, to Gears 5 Versus players.

Arcade Deathmatch is just the beginning, where two teams of five race to be first to 50 kills. This promises to be unlike any Gears TDM you’ve ever played!

I’ve cooled on the Gears franchise over the years, but I’m legitimately excited for Gears 5.

Gears 5 is set to launch September 10.

Gears of War 5 Kicks Paid Loot Boxes to the Curb

While EA really wants you to believe that paid loot boxes are just like delicious Kinder Eggs, Gears of War 5 devs The Coalition will be doing away with them entirely.

It’s all laid out nice and neat on the game’s official blog:

In Gears 5, our goal is to create a player-first experience when it comes to in-game content, and it starts with this:
– No Season Pass
– No Gear Packs
– DLC Maps are free for matchmaking and Private Play
– Exclusive earnable content in the all-new Tour of Duty system
– All store purchases are direct, no RNG so you always know what you will get

How refreshing, but I’m not surprised. Change is needed as various governments are coming down on the practice of paid loot boxes hard.

This is good for gamers though, and at least The Coalition and by extension Microsoft, are not blowing smoke up people’s asses claiming that loot boxes are “actually quite ethical and quite fun, quite enjoyable to people.”

Meatheads with Chainsaw Guns 5 (aka Gears of War 5) to be Showcased at E3 2019

Microsoft is pretty much going to have E3 2019 to themselves, so they better make the best of it. So we’re going to get treated to some Gears of War 5 stuff at the Xbox press event on June 9.

Look. I like Gears of War. I was 26 when the the original was launched, kicking off the franchise. I was a big dumb meathead back then, so the game really resonated with me. 14 years later, I’ve blossomed into my dad bod, so I cannot really relate to these characters anymore.

I do like the idea of playing as Kait Diaz this time around. Playing as the same old meatheads with guns was getting stale. Also Kait is a badass and smokeshow, so bonus.

Fact: Badass and Smokeshow
